Three pools on South Matlack Street

Member-owned, member-run, open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Through the breezeway

From the front desk down the hill to the grove

Members check in at the Front Desk through the breezeway. Past it the club opens out down a grassy slope: two pools on the upper deck, the lap pool below, then the pavilion, the grills and the courts.

Upper deck

The Main Pool and its diving well

The original L-shaped pool runs from 3 feet to 10 feet under the diving board. The water slide stands at its edge: feet first, sitting up. Yellow umbrellas ring the deck, and the flag flies over the basketball hoop.

Six lanes, twenty-five meters

Vincent Pools built the lower pool in 1987. It is a standard 25 meter lap pool, 4 to 5 feet deep, open to anyone who has passed the deep water test, and it is where the Whales practice.

The pavilion and the Baby Pool below it

Members paid for the pavilion in 1967. The Baby Pool sits beside it, 9 inches deep at the edge, so parents in the shade can keep an eye on the youngest swimmers.

The grove

Picnic tables, charcoal grills, a long evening

Food stays in the picnic grove, away from the water. There are tables, charcoal grills, a full basketball court, a gaga ball pit, wiffle ball, wall ball, four square, shuffleboard and two horseshoe pits.

Three depths, painted where you step in

Trained lifeguards staff all three pools during every hour the club is open. Children under 12 swim in water over their heads only after passing the deep water test.

10ft

Main Pool

The original L-shaped pool, 75 by 36 feet, from 3 feet at the shallow end down to 10 feet in the 30 by 25 foot diving well. 133,000 gallons. No diving in the upper pool except in the well by the board.

25m

Lower Pool

A standard six-lane lap pool, 82 by 44 feet and 4 to 5 feet deep, holding 124,000 gallons. Open to anyone who has passed the deep water test.

9in

Baby Pool

38 by 30 feet, from 9 inches to 1 foot 8 inches deep, beside the pavilion so parents in the grove can see it. For pre-swimming children up to age 6, with an adult alongside.

Pools, programs and the grove

Six parts of a Wedgewood summer, each with its own page: the three pools, the Whales, lessons for members, and the pavilion where the day ends.

Swim, relax, enjoy

The club's own three words, and still the plan for most July afternoons. Club membership is open to the public, subject to availability, through a wait list.

“Amazing place for families to spend their summer! They have a great summer swim team with amazing coaches. I was a lifeguard here for years. Some of my best memories are playing with friends all day at the pool and then growing up into lifeguards to watch the next generation do the same.”

Thomas Wittig, Google review

“Love it here! One of the most beautiful/well-maintained pool grounds (that doesn't exist within a country club) I've ever seen. Pool is always clean, staff is friendly... I wish they were open later in the year but that's my only gripe!”

ADrunken Ewok, Google review

“From 1963 to 1973 when I was small child my family and I lived on Beechwood Road. We would walk from our house to the club all summer. I remember the ice cream man too lol. A wonderful place to be!”

From turkey wire to six lanes

Wedgewood has been owned by the families who swim in it since the first meeting in October 1957. Today the swim team alone counts about 200 swimmers.

1958

  1. 1957October: the first recorded meeting to organize a swim club.
  2. 1958Sapphire Pools contracted for a 25 yard L-shaped pool, a baby pool, an office and a breezeway. 66 families by June. Members built the bath house themselves that July; one beer can from that wall still remains. The first fence was turkey wire.
  3. 1967The pavilion goes up, paid for with membership funds.
  4. 1987Vincent Pools builds the lower pool, now the six-lane lap pool.
  5. 1998A new bathhouse, with a family and accessible bathroom and shower.
  6. 2003The original 1958 steel upper pool is removed and rebuilt in plaster.

Wait list, guests, weather and the winter phone

Club membership is open to the public, subject to availability. New applications go on a wait list in the order they are received, and how quickly it moves depends on how many families return each year, so there is no guarantee of acceptance in a given season. Email the Board at wedgewoodbod@gmail.com to apply or ask where the list stands.

Wedgewood opens seasonally, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, from noon into the evening. Daily hours are posted on the club calendar, and special events can run later. Thunder or lightning clears the pools and deck until 30 minutes after the last strike.

Members 18 and older can bring up to six guests a day and must stay with them. A guest pass is $8 in season or $6 bought in the offseason, grandparents are free, and passes never expire. Each guest can visit ten times a season and wears a wristband from the front desk.

Children under 12 cannot be alone in water over their heads until they pass a deep water test given by the pool manager or a lifeguard. Tests are available on request. Only swimmers who have passed it may use the Lower Pool, the 25 meter lap pool.

More than six non-member guests counts as a party. Parties run Monday to Saturday, never on Sundays, holidays or scheduled events, cost $10 per party guest, top out at 25 people and end 30 minutes before closing. Email wedgewoodbod@gmail.com at least two days ahead.

The club phone, (610) 696-4390, is answered only during summer hours, so please do not leave a voicemail. Out of season, email the Board at wedgewoodbod@gmail.com.
